Product photography is the single most important visual element in your online store. Studies consistently show that image quality is the #1 factor influencing purchase decisions in e-commerce. But you don't need a professional studio or expensive equipment to get great shots.
The Equipment You Actually Need
A modern smartphone (iPhone 12+ or Android equivalent) shoots photos that are indistinguishable from a DSLR for product photography. The camera is not your bottleneck — lighting and setup are.
Essential equipment (under PKR 5,000):
- A large white foam board or white poster paper — acts as your backdrop (PKR 200–500)
- A second white foam board as a reflector to fill shadows (PKR 200)
- A smartphone tripod (PKR 1,500–3,000)
- Natural window light — completely free and often the best light source
The Window Light Setup
Place your product on a table beside a large window. The window light provides soft, directional illumination. Place your white foam board reflector on the opposite side to bounce light back and eliminate harsh shadows.
Shoot during overcast days or when the sun isn't directly hitting the window. Direct sunlight creates harsh, unflattering shadows. Soft, diffused light makes products look expensive.
The Angles That Sell
For every product, capture these five angles minimum:
- Front hero shot — Clean, centered, white background. This is your main listing image.
- 45-degree angle — Shows depth and dimension
- Detail/texture close-up — Critical for fashion, accessories, and handmade items
- Scale shot — Shows size relative to a familiar object or on a person
- Lifestyle shot — Product in real-world use. This drives emotional connection and is often the highest-converting image.
Editing Your Photos
Free tools are more than sufficient. Snapseed (free, mobile) and Adobe Lightroom Mobile (free version) can transform an average photo into a professional one. Key adjustments:
- Increase exposure slightly — e-commerce photos should be bright, not dark
- Boost clarity to show product detail
- Remove color casts — your white background should be pure white
- Crop to a 1:1 square for Shopify and Instagram consistency
When to Hire a Professional
DIY photography works for launching your store. But once you're generating consistent revenue, investing in professional product photography typically delivers a 15–25% increase in conversion rate — which compounds significantly at scale.
At Taswiqs, our branding team handles product photography as part of our store setup packages, ensuring your first impression is a professional one from day one.
